An artificial intelligence (AI) researcher and entrepreneur, Daniela Amodei, has spent almost a decade working across the high-tech AI industry.

Co-founded Anthropic in 2021, the company has garnered global attention and investments from multi-billionaire companies, including Amazon, Google, and SAP.

Student Graduate

While Daniela Amodei is known for her career in AI, she has a completely different academic background. After graduating from high school, she attended the University of California, Santa Cruz, where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature, Politics, and Music.

In her university, she received her formal education with top honors and awards such as Summa Cum Laude, University Honors, College Honors, Literature Department Honors, and Dean’s List.

Business Development

In 2010, after receiving her undergraduate degree, she served in the position of business development at IRIS Centre, University of Maryland, College Park. Two years later, in 2012, she joined Matt Cartwright for Congress, wherein she worked as a Field Director and was later promoted to Deputy Field Director.

When she joined the financial services Stripe, in 2013, she started in recruitment and was later promoted to the risk program movement. At Stripe, Amodei received machine learning and cross-functionality work in data learning, engineering, legal, finance, and vendor management.

Vice President of OpenAI

After serving five years at Stripe, in 2018, she resigned to join Open AI as its Vice President. In the AI company, she worked in recruiting, people programs, development, and learning.

However, two years later, Amodei and her brother, Dario Amodei, who was working as a VP of Research at OpenAI, decided to quit the company. Meanwhile, the decision came after the duo realized that the company was commercializing AI too quickly.

The Foundation of Anthropic

Soon after resigning from OpenAI, the duo, Daniela Amodei and Dario Amodei, founded Anthropic, an AI public benefit company. The siblings believe that AI should be developed accordingly, as a Copilot, and not something extensive to dominate society.

In an interview, Amodei stated how her co-founded company differs from OpenAI. She said, “Our research and safety focus was our primary emphasis. We have this view that safety is incredibly valuable and economically viable.”

With the AI company, the sibling’s pride in introducing a safer approach to the machine and AI world transformed. The company, Anthropic, rather than transforming AI into a cutting-edge technology model, had a vision to use AI to improve people’s lives.

In the same interview, Amodei added, “We had this vision of really training models with humans and safety at the center.”

Three years after the company’s foundation, Anthropic AI has gained popularity with users. The company’s machine interpretability allows the developers to carry out the analogous activity to a brain scan. Meanwhile, this is to see what is going on inside an AI system rather than answering questions based on output.

In March 2023, Anthropic developed a large language model, Claude AI, competing with Open AI’s ChatGPT. According to the company, the AI model can help use cases like summarization, research, creative and collaborative writing, Q&A, and coding. The customers reviewed that Claude AI has improved prompts, is less likely to harm humans, and more easier to use.

Amodei, in an interview, talked about Claude AI and said, “What we’ve heard from our users is that Claude comes across as friendly and warm. I tend to think of Claude as a very eager junior assistant and a tool that wants to help.”

In June 2023, Amodei revised and introduced Claude 2, which was tailored and expected for wider use.

Amodei, in an interview, said, “We have aimed to make Claude as safe as possible. We have seen some improvements [in Claude 2] from Claude 1 in terms of harmlessness and honesty and helpfulness.”

In September 2023, the siblings, Daniela and Dario, were named among the Times 100 Most Influential Persons in AI. Additionally, Daniela was featured in our list of the top 10 women in AI.
